"While on a research trip to catch storm-petrels, our dinghy was often surrounded by seabirds at the opposite end of the size spectrum – albatrosses. Campbell albatross (Thalassarche impavida) are the only species to have a startlingly golden eye, giving them a piercing, serious gaze. T

heir presence around our boat was testament to a phenomenal sense of smell which guides them towards fishy prey over vast areas of ocean, but unfortunately also puts them at risk of honing in on fishing vessels, and becoming bycatch in long-line or trawl fisheries.

Campbell albatross breed on only one island – Campbell island – in the subantarctic region of Aotearoa, and are classed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species."
