"Cramped quarters. Two ruru (morepork) chicks, peer expectantly back at me from inside a hollow mamaku, clicking their beaks, hoping for a morsel of dinner. Over the course of several weeks, I watched the pair take their first adventures into the world, visiting them regularly to watch their rapid growth and progress. This shot was the last time they were seen at the nesting site.

From here I documented their fledge, and their journey into independence — learning how to use their eyes and swivel their heads to watch for prey and predators, learning to hunt, and where to find the best ponga trees to hide from the rain. All this was made possible thanks to the relentless predator control in the area. Without this ongoing community effort, witnessing such unique moments would likely never have been possible."
